Attorneys general join $69M electronic book deal
NEW YORK (AP) ? Attorneys general in 55 jurisdictions who claim there was a conspiracy to fix prices of electronic books say they've gotten on board with a $69 million settlement of antitrust claims against three publishers.
Publishers Hachette, HarperCollins and Simon & Shuster had earlier settled with the U.S. government.
News releases from attorneys general in 55 states, districts and territories Wednesday said $69 million will be paid to consumers who bought electronic books from the publishers between April 1, 2010, and May 21. Payments are to begin a month after a court approves the deal.
The publishers also will pay $7.5 million to the states to cover costs. A variation of the settlement was announced in April, but attorneys general in many states hadn't joined in.
Hachette denied it was in a conspiracy but said it changed its pricing structure.

Sony's VPL-HW50ES projector revealed at IFA, ships in October
Slotting in above the VPL-HW30ES, this VPL-HW50ES uses a version of the same technology seen in the VW1000ES to process images for 4K does not do 4K at all and of course supports 3D. We're all very familiar with the company's SXRD projectors by now but if you need more information the press release is after the break. While we know these are due to ship across Europe in both black and white by the end of October, what you won't find, at least so far, is a price tag. We'll keep our eyes peeled at CEDIA next week for more information.
Update: Whoops, no, this is not a part of Sony's all-4K everything push, and brings merely 1080p resolution with some fancy image processing tech. We're now not quite as excited to see it, but 1,700 lumens of brightness, built-in 3D transmitter and wider lens shift range aren't too disappointing.

Net Profit in First-Half nearly RMB1.5 billion
HONG KONG, Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ ? Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (?Guangzhou Automobile Group? or the ?Company?; stock codes: 2238.HK; 601238.SH), today announced its interim results for the first half of 2012. Interim report shows that the sales revenue of the Company amounted to RMB5,482 million, an increase of 5.67% compared to the same period last year. The Company and its joint ventures and associated companies realized total revenues of approximately RMB78,816 million, an increase of approximately RMB9,987 million, or approximately 14.51% compared with the same period last year. The net profit attributable to equity holders of the Company amounted to RMB 1,482 million and the earnings per share were RMB0.24. The Board of Directors recommended a payment of an interim dividend of RMB0.07 per share (including tax) for the year ended 30 June 2012.
After consecutive years of rapid growth, China?s automobile production and sales have entered the high consolidation phase in the past two years. In the first half of 2012, subject to the slowdown in domestic macroeconomic growth and automobile purchase restriction in some cities, the sales of the domestic automobile market recorded a significant reduction compared to the same period last year. According to the statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the production and sales of cars in the first half of this year were 9,529,200 units and 9,598,100 units respectively, representing a respective increase of 4.1% and 2.9%, compared to the same period last year and translating to a modest growth in the overall automobile production and sales. The production and sales of motorcycles were 11,629,100 units and 11,738,100 respectively, representing a respective decrease of 11.41% and 10.82% compared to the same period last year and reaching their lowest in the past six years over the same period.
Despite the adverse impacts of the slowdown in macroeconomic growth and automobile industry growth, the Company managed to realize sales growth in the sluggish market environment through market development, inventory adjustment, cost reduction and marketing, based on the interim report of the Company.
In the first half of this year, Guangzhou Automobile Group realized sales volume of 369,700 units, an increase of 17.25% compared to the same period last year. Among which the sales of passenger vehicles amounted to 351,800 units, an increase of 15.32% compared to the same period last year while the sales of commercial vehicles amounted to 472,100 units, an increase of 13.80% compared to the same period last year. In the first half of this year, the year-on-year growth in the Company?s sales of both vehicles and motorcycles was higher than the industry average.
In the light of the difficult market environment and fierce competition, Guangzhou Automobile Group run sales promotions for some of its brands, resulting in a decline in profit margins and a modest drop in net profit compared to the same period in 2011.
In addition to the relatively fast growth in sales, the Company made significant achievements during the first half of this year, including the listing of A shares, research and development, introduction of new products, construction of production capacity, expansion of business chain and the innovation in management mechanism.
Based on the interim report, the asset restructuring involved in the Guangzhou Automobile Group?s convertible merger with GAC Changfeng and the follow-up work of the joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors are advancing smoothly. The new 2.4L Crosstour, launched by Guangqi Honda, a major investee of the Company, was well received. GAC Toyota CAMRY pushed forward the application and promotion of hybrid vehicle technology while realizing the upgrade of CAMRY while CAMRY HEV, a model of petrol and electric hybrid powered vehicle, has also been formally launched onto the market. Taliban deny report of Haqqani commander's death
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan rejected reports that the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network has been killed, even as senior insurgents and members of the Pakistani government said they believe Badruddin Haqqani was dead.
Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email sent to reporters late Saturday that Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.
The statement conflicts with assertions by a senior Taliban commander that a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan killed Haqqani. Pakistani intelligence officials have also said they are 90 percent certain he was killed in an American missile strike Tuesday in the North Waziristan region. They said their information was based on reports received from their agents in the field but acknowledged they haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the body.
If confirmed, Haqqani's death would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, which is viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in Afghanistan. The son is considered the network's day-to-day operations commander.
The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan.
"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email.
"Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and his is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy," he said.
The senior Taliban commander's assertion that Badruddin died in a drone strike has not been independently confirmed, and the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.
All except Mujahid spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the news.
The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.
Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan.
Replacing him would be a challenge but not impossible, said Daniel Markey, a Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.
"The question would be whether anyone would be as trusted, as well-placed, would have forged the kind of longstanding connections and would have the kind of pedigree that he has," said Markey. "This is a big hit if it's true but it's not going to put them out of business."
The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.
Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.
After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.
The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

Demystifying The Process Of Accepting Credit Cards As An Attorney
Accepting credit cards can be a very intimidating option to consider as a sole practitioner or small-firm attorney ? if you deal with collecting retainers from your clients?
The word ?merchant service? has developed an almost ominous connotation among solo professionals ? and for good reason. Most people associate the phrase with ludicrous fees, minimum transaction volumes, equipment rentals and restrictive contracts. And all too often, that notion is entirely justified.
In fact, several professionals simply choose to forget about accepting credit cards altogether ? because it?s just ?one less hassle? to deal with. Unfortunately, this can actually cost them quite a bit of business, whether they realize it or not. It?s been continually proven that providing your customers the option of paying with credit will increase sales (in this case, client volume) in practically every industry.
Furthermore, the main advantage for an attorney to accept credit cards wouldn?t so much be an increase in client volume as it would eliminate waiting for checks in the mail ? not to mention having someone make a bank run to get them deposited. And credit card payments don?t ?bounce? either!
The truth is that while there actually are some very affordable (and flexible) services available to solo professionals, they?re also very few and far between. And in most cases, they?re not easy to recognize.
So let?s explore some of the terms and terminology of the merchant industry so as to ?de-mystify? the process of choosing a merchant company that will effectively suit your practice?
?Statement Fees: Most merchant account providers will charge you to simply receive your billing statement. This normally costs $10.00 per month. This is, for the most part, a ?pointless? fee for the purpose of generating additional revenue for the merchant company as it much more than covers the cost of distributing a statement ? although, not all companies have a statement fee.
?Monthly Minimums: Several programs include a ?minimum?, which is not a minimum amount of sales volume, but rather it?s a minimum charge in regards to transaction fees. Normally, this is $25.00 per month. This does not mean that a $25.00 sale will waive the minimum.
?Transaction Fees: This is a flat-fee per transaction through your merchant account. This will typically be around $0.25 per transaction ? although different credit cards will themselves charge a transaction fee as well, such as American Express and Discover.
?The Annual Fee: The majority of merchant services will employ an annual fee, ranging from $45.00 to $95.00. Again, this is simply a premium for using the service.
?Program Fees: Also called the ?monthly fee?, this is simply a monthly premium ranging from $5.00 to $25.00 per month to accept credit cards via the merchant service in question.
?Discount Rates: Also known as the ?flat rate?, this is a percentage of every sale that is automatically commissioned to the merchant service, and split between them and their processor (if they?re a third party). This will range from 1.95% to 5.95%, depending on the nature of the service.
?The Cancellation Fee: The majority of merchant services do utilize a ?minimum term of duration? within their account contract. To cancel the contract before it?s term has expired will cost anywhere from $95.00 to $250.00, sometimes more.
?Equipment Lease or Purchase: In general, you?re required to either lease or buy the (expensive) equipment needed to process credit card ?swipes?. Leasing equipment can range from $29.00 to $79.00 per month, with an average term of 36 ? 48 months. These leases cannot be cancelled. In addition, you will be paying the relevant state tax on those payments ? and to top it off, most companies will charge an extra $3.00 per month or so for a ?Loss and Destruction? waiver. At the end of the lease, you must either return the equipment in good condition, or you must purchase the equipment for at its current market value. The purchase price will be something like 15% of the aggregate lease payments (for a 36-month term).
As you can clearly see, all of this can add up to a substantial amount of money ? and if you do default on the equipment lease, it will show up on your credit report.
Accepting credit cards doesn?t seem too exciting at this point, does it?
However, as I had mentioned previously, there are some affordable options within the merchant industry that actually cater directly to solo professionals and part-time business owners.
For example, did you know that you can accept credit cards ? without any equipment at all ? by simply using your cell phone (or blackberry)?
Not only is this type of system totally mobile, most of these services are uniquely affordable. One in particular, ?Accept by Phone?, costs only $5.00 a month with a discount rate of 3.95% on each sale. Such services are able to bypass all the other fees because of the way that transactions are processed ? and the automated call-in system literally allows the vendor to authorize and process the payment in real time within a matter of seconds.
Additionally, this service does not have a minimum term ? or a cancellation fee.
Glenn Garnes, attorney and webmaster of Lawyer Lounge, recently reviewed the mentioned service:
?I can?t tell you how many times I?ve been on the road, at the courthouse, or out of the office when someone wanted to make a payment, and I delayed my ability to accept it by having to ask them to send a check. I also can?t tell you how many times that check was late or never came in the first place.
?If you bill for your fees, or if you have a collections practice, this [type of system is the perfect way to increase your cash flow conveniently, and cost effectively, not to mention how it improves your profile in the eyes of your client.?
Now, even if you would be processing most of your payments at the office ? and if you needed equipment ? there are also a variety of cost-effective services that suit that need as well. Just make sure that you take a very close look at the terms and conditions of the service in question.
Remember that the most crucial element of any merchant service is the term (duration) of the contract. They may be offering free applications, low fees and so on, but make sure that it?s not because they plan on locking you into a two-year contract.
Unfortunately, this is how most merchant companies make their money.
However, you?re no longer at the mercy of the merchant industry, because you?ve just taken a ?behind the scenes? look at how the whole system really works. You can now investigate accepting credit cards from your clients with confidence, knowing that it truly is possible to make life easier ? not harder ? by allowing your clients to pay with credit.
Especially those that are ?cash-strapped?.
It?s simply a matter of finding a service that caters directly to your needs as an attorney.

Exercise may temporarily ease cigarette cravings: study
(Reuters) - Smokers who are trying to cut down or quit might want to take a jog the next time a cigarette craving overcomes them, according to a British study.
Researchers, whose findings appeared in the journal Addiction, combined the data from 19 previous clinical trials and found that a bout of exercise generally helped hopeful quitters reduce their nicotine cravings - though whether that translated into a greater chance of quitting was unclear.
"Certainly, exercise seems to have temporary benefits, and as such can be strongly recommended," said Adrian Taylor, a professor of exercise and health psychology at the University of Exeter in Britain, who led the study.
In the trials used for the study, smokers were randomly assigned to either exercise - most often, brisk walking or biking - or some kind of "passive" activity, such as watching a video or just sitting quietly.
Overall, Taylor's team found, people said they had less desire to smoke after working out than they did before.
Exactly why is not clear. Exercise may serve as a distraction, while being active might also boost people's mood, so that they don't feel as great a need to feel better by smoking, Taylor said.
None of the smokers in the studies was in a quit program or using nicotine replacement products, such as gums or patches. Since nicotine replacement therapy curbs cravings, exercise might have less of an effect on smokers using these products. SOURCE: http://bit.l/SwF01w

Chicago Cubs Top Colorado Rockies: North Siders End 4-Game Skid
CHICAGO ? Joe Mather took advantage of a rare start with a go-ahead single during a three-run rally in the eighth inning Friday and the Chicago Cubs ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies had matched a season best with a five-game winning streak.
Chicago trailed 3-2 going into the eighth before Brett Jackson led off with his second homer of the season.
Pinch hitter Luis Valbuena doubled with one out and Mather, batting in the leadoff spot usually occupied by David DeJesus, followed with an RBI single against reliever Matt Belisle (3-5).
Mather later scored on reliever Matt Reynolds' throwing error to first on Anthony Rizzo's grounder.
James Russell (6-1) got two outs for the win and Carlos Marmol closed for his 16th save.
The Rockies scored in the first on an error by shortstop Starlin Castro, a single by Jordan Pacheco and a wild pitch by Jeff Samardzija.
Chris Nelson made it 2-0 in the second with his sixth homer. Carlos Gonzalez led off the third with his 21st homer and first since July 23.
Alfonso Soriano and Welington Castillo hit solo home runs in the Cubs fifth off Drew Pomeranz, making it 3-2.
Pomeranz left after the fifth. The home runs were the only hits he allowed.
Samardzija gave up two earned runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out seven.

Greenpeace Activists Board Gazprom's Arctic Offshore Oil Rig [Video]
Greenpeace activists have interrupted drilling operations on Gazprom's Prirazlomnaya Arctic oil platfform.
Located in the Pechora Sea, off the North-eastern coast of Russia, Prirazlomnaya represents the first offshore drilling rig to begin drilling in the previously untouched of the Arctic.? As the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico proved, deepwater offshore oil drilling is risky business, especially for the environment.?Experts warn the level of risk is even greater in the Arctic.
Gazprom is not the only oil and gas company aiming to tap the Arctic Ocean's oil reserves.? Royal Dutch Shell, BP, and ExxonMobil all have plans to begin drilling in the near future.
Greenpeace is using this peaceful action to highlight the dangers of drilling in the Arctic, especially by the Russian oil industry which spills more than 30 million barrels of oil every year.? Greenpeace says the activists aboard Prirazlomanaya have enough food to last days.

Today I bought three huge bags of neon fur and a pound of glitter to mod podge. Because that?s just the kind of stuff on your to-do list when you?re getting ready for Burning Man.
It?s my first burn and I am positively buzzing with anticipation. Outfits and magical fairy dust aside, there are practical survival things to think about too, like what are we going to eat?
We are going to be in the middle of the desert in hundred degree weather and no refrigeration, just coolers and a supply of ice. It?s going to be extreme camping cooking. I?ve done my research and have picked up some great tips:
- Ziplocks are your best friend. Even better, a vacuum sealer is your bestest best friend, but Ziplocks will do fine. Playa dust will get on everything and the best way to minimize ingestion of it is to prepare and portion out meals ahead of time.
- Portion out your ice in Ziplocks. When it melts, your cooler won?t turn into a soupy mess, and you?ll have a baggie of ice-cold water to drink. Ahh, refreshing!
- Elevate your food in the cooler using Tupperware or layers of cardboard. If your bags of ice leak, this adds some protection for your goods so they?re not sitting on the bottom of your cooler in water.
- Label your coolers with contents. This will minimize unnecessary opening and closing. This especially holds true if you are the kind of person who stands in front of the fridge hemming and hawing over what you?re in the mood for.
- Your body will crave hydration, protein, and sodium. Plan accordingly. Some popular items: bacon, soups, chili, peanut butter.
- Opt for sturdy breads. Flat bread and naan will last longer than softer breads.
- Don?t forget your coffee/tea/French press. Mint tea can help settle stomachs.
- Bring Coconut Oil. You can cook with it, use it to soften hands and feet battered by the elements, and it doesn't require refrigeration.
- Have an easy meal ready for Night 1. You are going to be excited and busy setting up camp. It may be late. You won?t want to cook a thing. Grab a burrito in Reno so you have something easy and ready to eat.
- Get some of your favorite take-out and freeze it. It will be a great later-in-the-week treat. Indian? Great choice. Sushi? Not so much.
My game plan is to prepare as much as possible in advance, portion out the meals, vacuum seal, and freeze them so that on-site prep will be fast, easy, and will produce minimal grey water (you are not allowed to dump waste water on the playa).

Tennis ref's attorney: arrest, charges 'unfounded'
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney for a professional tennis referee accused of killing her 80-year-old husband denounced the allegations Friday and criticized Los Angeles police for arresting her in New York, where she would have been a line judge in next week's U.S. Open.
Still wearing a tennis official outfit, Lois Goodman, 70, appeared briefly in Superior Court in Van Nuys but her arraignment and bond hearing were continued to Wednesday to allow her attorney time to file a motion seeking reduction of her $1 million bail and allow her to be released on her own recognizance.
Her sister and daughter were in the courtroom but couldn't see her because she was behind a meshed-covered window.
Outside court, Goodman's attorney condemned the arrest.
"She's distraught. This is an outrage," Alison Triessl said. "She is in shock and her family is very concerned for her."
Goodman has cooperated with investigators throughout, she said.
"These charges are outrageous and they're completely unfounded," the attorney said. "The Los Angeles Police Department should be ashamed of arresting a 70-year-old woman in New York who has made herself available to investigators in Los Angeles."
Triessl also responded to implications in the search warrant affidavit that Goodman may have been involved in a relationship with another man.
"There was no romantic relationship with anyone else. It's absurd to suggest that," she said.
She said she had met with Goodman briefly and "My client absolutely maintains her innocence."
During the search of Goodman's home, police said they seized evidence that Lois Goodman had been communicating on the Internet with another man, though the nature of that relationship was not clear.
The affidavit said one email contained the phrases "terminating a relationship," and having "alternative sleeping arrangements," though police could not determine to what it referred.
Triessl said it was not referring to an affair.
Deputy District Attorney Lisa Tanner said prosecutors allege that Goodman bludgeoned her husband to death with a coffee cup that broke and then used the sharp handle to stab him.
"All of these facts will come out during the trial," Tanner said. "The people are confident that justice will prevail."
Goodman was returned to Los Angeles late Thursday after agreeing to not fight extradition from New York.
Los Angeles police have said Goodman was poised to be in New York for several weeks and they wanted to move swiftly to arrest a murder suspect.
Her husband, Alan Goodman, died on April 17 at the couple's condominium in Woodland Hills. Authorities briefly accepted Lois Goodman's explanation that she returned home to find a blood-covered coffee mug and her husband lying in bed not breathing after most likely falling down the stairs.
Two fire department paramedics answering the 911 call made note of an odd-shaped wound on Goodman's head, according to a police detective's affidavit. They advised police that "the scene appeared suspicious and left the body undisturbed," said the document attached to a search warrant by police Detective Jeffrey T. Briscoe.
But after questioning Lois Goodman, police released her husband's body to her and it was transported to a mortuary for cremation. But on April 20, before that could happen, a coroner's investigator, Mario Sainz, was sent to the crematory to sign a death certificate. His examination of the body turned the case into a homicide investigation, according to the affidavit.
"Saenz discovered that the decedent sustained multiple lacerations to the right side of his head and also had three cuts to the right ear," said the affidavit. "The injuries appeared to be deep, penetrating blunt force trauma that was consistent with being inflicted with a sharp object.
"Saenz stated that he believed there was sufficient evidence to suggest that this was a homicide," said Briscoe.
The body was then taken to the coroner's office for an autopsy which found nine to ten distinct injuries to the right side of Goodman's head and concluded "his death was caused by another person."
When police executed a subsequent search warrant, they found blood throughout the three-story house "inconsistent with accidental death" and suggesting a "mobile victim," the affidavit said.
Blood was found on the carpets, in a linen closet, on the refrigerator door and on a wall leading to the first floor garage.
During her initial questioning, Goodman "went out of her way to account for her time on the day of the decedent's death"
"Lois' emotional reaction to what she had seen and the loss of her husband was not typical of that of a grieving spouse," the affidavit said.
Detectives worked the case for four months. An arrest warrant was filed Aug. 14.
