Christie: 'Washington Politicians Only Care About Bringing Home the Bacon'

New Jersey governor Chris Christie, asked on Tuesday to respond to an ongoing back and forth between himself and fellow Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky, said he was "asked a question" about national security and answered it.

"Now I know for politicians in Washington, D.C., this is a completely foreign concept. They think there has to be some, like, master plan behind every utterance you make," said Christie, who had criticized a "libertarian" streak within the GOP on national security issues at a forum last week in Colorado and called it "dangerous" for the party. When asked specifically about Paul, a leading libertarian in the Senate, Christie acknowledged that Paul was one of those with whom he disagreed.

Paul soon shot back, including Christie in a group of people "who are unwilling to cut the spending, and they're 'Gimme, gimme, gimme--give me all my Sandy money now.' Those are the people who are bankrupting the government and not letting enough money be left over for national defense."

Christie added on Tuesday that he found it "interesting" that Paul said New Jersey had a "gimme gimme" attitude on federal spending, pointing out that New Jersey pays more than it receives in federal tax dollars while Kentucky receives more than it pays.

"So if Senator Paul wants to start looking at where he's going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start looking at cutitng the pork barrel spending that he brings home to Kentucky," Christie said. "But I doubt he would because most Washington politicians only care about bringing home the bacon so they can get reelected."

IG: Energy Grants for Electric Car Charging 'Overly Generous'

Energy Department (DOE) grants to Ecotality, a company that makes charging stations for electric cars went too far, though they weren't illegal, according to a report from the DOE's inspector general.

Republicans have launched withering criticism at Ecotality for the $135 million it has received from DOE, The Hill reports. Of that total, $100 million came as part of the fiscal stimulus program in 2009, and the remainder came in grants from 2005 to 2011.

"While we did not specifically identify evidence indicating that the cost-share was prohibited under federal regulations, we did note that the amount of cost-share permitted appeared to be fairly generous,? DOE Inspector General Gregory Friedman wrote in the report.

Indeed, "existing policies were not effective in preventing what we consider to be the allowance of an overly generous cost-share for this project," he said.

Ecotality garnered its grants for a regional project to demonstrate its charging stations. Friedman investigated whether the federal government could pay for Ecotality costs that are usually allocated to consumers.

"While in-kind contributions that are directly proportional to value received are allowable, the vehicles and Internet connections were purchased to satisfy personal needs of consumers, not solely for the project," Friedman wrote.

BUSINESS2SELL BOOSTS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE ONLINE ENQUIRIES & SALES AND PROVES IT WITH THREE MONTHS FREE TRIAL

Business2Sell.com.au has been busy connecting all sectors of the business sales community from business buyers to brokers, valuations and finance companies. Ranking among the top four sites in Australia the success of Business2Sell.com.au has rippled through over 12,000 businesses.

Now it?s time to mirror that success in broader markets. With the launch of CommercialProperty2Sell, the founders are confident that the site will deliver maximum value for money and make huge inroads into this market in a short space of time. CommercialProperty2Sell spokesperson, Paul O?Brien said that up until now the quality of websites, the lack of potential leads and the level of service provided by existing sites left a lot to be desired and big gaps in the needs of commercial real estate agents and brokers.

?A lot of business brokers also have commercial properties listed,? said Paul. ?These professionals are crying out for a website and service that delivers real value for money, impact and great pulling power. CommercialProperty2Sell.com.au aims to provide the commercial real estate industry with the tools of 21st century that will connect them with their potential buyer by utilising videos, social media and advanced Internet marketing. The point of difference between CommercialProperty2Sell and other websites is that this site will be focused on working with the industry, listening to what is required and providing the best darned service possible ? not just taking profits and continually increasing costs.?

CommercialProperty2Sell is the brainchild of Net vision Software ? a company with well over a decade of experience in IT, on-line applications and websites with full integration of SEO and Social Media. Paul went on to say that one of the big things that triggered the new enterprise was the lack of reputable websites delivering real results in this area. ?They are either focused on a particular region or group of people. We have found that most commercial real estate agents are increasingly dissatisfied with market leaders and what they get for their money and simply not listening to industry needs.?

CommercialProperty2Sell is offering a 3 month free trial as a welcoming introduction to all real estate agents. What?s more, in the unlikely event that your listings have not received 100 leads in this first 3 month period, CommercialProperty2Sell will extend your trial by another 3 months.

What have you got to lose? For more information or to grab your 3 month free trial visit http://www.commercialproperty2sell.com.au

Leno, other celebs oppose Calif. prison practice

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Celebrities including Jay Leno and Gloria Steinem have condemned the isolation of inmates to control gang violence at California prisons ? a practice that sparked a hunger strike by hundreds of inmates.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/11r7OMR ) the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Bonnie Raitt and Noam Chomsky also signed a letter sent Monday to Gov. Jerry Brown that calls the isolation system inhumane.

A demonstration is planned Tuesday at the state Capitol.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Deborah Hoffman says the isolation units serve a "vital role" in protecting prison staff and other inmates from violent gangs. Thousands have been isolated, some for decades.

Prison officials say 385 inmates have continuously refused to eat since July 8, while another 176 have been involved in shorter protests. More than 50 have needed medical care.

Software experts attack cars, to release code as hackers meet

Security

Car hacking is not a new field, but its secrets have long been closely guarded. That is about to change, thanks to two well-known computer software hackers who got bored finding bugs in software from Microsoft and Apple.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek say they will publish detailed blueprints of techniques for attacking critical systems in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape in a 100-page white paper, following several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government.

The two "white hats" ? hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them ? will also release the software they built for hacking the cars at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas this week.

They said they devised ways to force a Toyota Prius to brake suddenly at 80 miles an hour, jerk its steering wheel, or accelerate the engine. They also say they can disable the brakes of a Ford Escape traveling at very slow speeds, so that the car keeps moving no matter how hard the driver presses the pedal.

"Imagine what would happen if you were near a crowd," said Valasek, director of security intelligence at consulting firm IOActive, known for finding bugs in Microsoft's Windows software.

But it is not as scary as it may sound at first blush.

They were sitting inside the cars using laptops connected directly to the vehicles' computer networks when they did their work. So they will not be providing information on how to hack remotely into a car network, which is what would typically be needed to launch a real-world attack.

The two say they hope the data they publish will encourage other white-hat hackers to uncover more security flaws in autos so they can be fixed.

"I trust the eyes of 100 security researchers more than the eyes that are in Ford and Toyota," said Miller, a Twitter security engineer known for his research on hacking Apple's App Store.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company was reviewing the work. He said the carmaker had invested heavily in electronic security, but that bugs remained ? as they do in cars of other manufacturers.

"It's entirely possible to do," Hanson said, referring to the newly exposed hacks. "Absolutely we take it seriously."

Ford spokesman Craig Daitch said the company takes seriously the electronic security of its vehicles. He said the fact that Miller's and Valasek's hacking methods required them to be inside the vehicle they were trying to manipulate mitigated the risk.

"This particular attack was not performed remotely over the air, but as a highly aggressive direct physical manipulation of one vehicle over an elongated period of time, which would not be a risk to customers and any mass level," Daitch said.

'Time to shore up defenses'
Miller and Valasek said they did not research remote attacks because that had already been done.

A group of academics described ways to infect cars using Bluetooth systems and wireless networks in 2011. But unlike Miller and Valasek, the academics have kept the details of their work a closely guarded secret, refusing even to identify the make of the car they hacked.

Their work got the attention of the U.S. government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an auto cybersecurity research program.

"While increased use of electronic controls and connectivity is enhancing transportation safety and efficiency, it brings a new challenge of safeguarding against potential vulnerabilities," the agency said in a statement. It said it knew of no consumer incident where a vehicle was hacked.

Still, some experts believe malicious hackers may already have the ability to launch attacks.

"It's time to shore up the defenses," said Tiffany Strauchs Rad, a researcher with Kaspersky Lab, who previously worked for an auto security research center.

A group of European computer scientists had been scheduled to present research on hacking the locks of luxury vehicles, including Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, at a conference in Washington in mid-August.

But Volkswagen obtained a restraining order from a British high court prohibiting discussion of the research by Flavio D. Garcia of the University of Birmingham, and Roel Verdult and Baris Ege of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

A spokeswoman for the three scientists said they would pull out of the prestigious Usenix conference because of the restraining order. Both universities said they would hold off on publishing the paper, pending the resolution of litigation.

Volkswagen declined to comment.

Progress Being Made To Improve Communications With Fans

There?s some good news today that Newcastle United are at last trying to improve the relationship between the club and the fans, which has been almost non-existent since Mike Ashley bought the club over six years ago.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Newcastle United v Sunderland - St James' Park

Newcastle fans getting into better communication with club

News today that the club will recreate the Fans Forum, and that was scrapped in 2009.

The club have announced this on their web-site:

Three of 15 new supporter seats will be offered permanently to established fan groups ? Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST), NUFC Fans United and Newcastle United Disabled Supporters Association (NUDSA) ? while all fans can apply directly for the remaining 12 individual seats which represent different segments of the Magpies? diverse fan base.

So if you want to apply for a seat on the Forum ? now?s your chance.

Board members John Irving and Lee Charnley (Newcastle Secretary) will be among the seven club representatives, with an official from Wonga also set to be on the Fans Forum.

This is what Lee Marshall, PR and supporter liaison manager at Newcastle United said about the Forum:

?Supporters are the lifeblood of any football club, so introducing a new Forum which will enable Newcastle fans to share their views and ideas with the club?s decision-makers is a very positive step.?

?Direct, structured communication is vital to building a strong, sustainable relationship with our supporters and we are looking forward to working closely with them for the benefit of Newcastle United.?

This is how Newcastle will select the fan representatives ? and this is taken from the web-site:

Unlike many forums at other clubs, which are voted in by a panel or elected by fellow supporters on the strength of written applications, applicants to the new Fans? Forum at Newcastle United will be required to select an individual seat for which they meet criteria ? that is Milburn Stand representative must hold a valid season ticket in the Milburn Stand.

They will then be selected at random from all qualifying applicants, enabling every Newcastle United supporter to stand a chance of being on the Forum.

From our communications lately with NUFC Fans United it seems that group has been key to getting this stuff completed behind the scenes and Steve Hastie, of the group had this to say:

?The introduction of a Fans? Forum at Newcastle United is an important step in developing a positive two-way communication process between supporters and the Club.? ?The challenge as always is to ensure that such forums produce positive outcomes and NUFC Fans United hopes that all those who participate do so with the aim of ensuring that it is a success.?

We?ve been impressed with Media Relations manager Wendy Taylor and the newly appointed Supporter Liaison Officer Lee Marshall, in their attempts to get a good relationship going with the fans.

This is an excellent move by the club and it?s long been needed ? and we wanted to help to get the word out about it.

Comments welcome.

Pounds and prejudice: Jane Austen graces 10-pound banknote

HANDOUT / REUTERS

The Bank of England will debut a British 10 pound Sterling banknote bearing the likeness of author Jane Austen.

LONDON -- Lovers of Pride and Prejudice will no doubt be shouting, "A thousand times yes!" when they hear that British 19th century novelist Jane Austen will become the face of the new 10 pound note.

The Bank of England made that announcement on Wednesday, defusing criticism that women are under-represented on the country's currency.

The writer of classics such as "Sense and Sensibility" and "Emma" will replace naturalist Charles Darwin on the reverse of Britain's most popular banknote.

Britain's central bank sparked an outcry in April when it announced former prime minister Winston Churchill would replace social reformer Elizabeth Fry on the reverse side of the five pound note, depriving the currency of its only female historical figure.

Mark Carney, the first foreigner to head the bank in its 319-year history, praised Austen as "one of the greatest writers in English literature" and said the choice of future banknote characters would be reviewed to ensure a row of this sort did not erupt again.

"We believe that our notes should celebrate the full diversity of great British historical figures and their contributions in a wide range of fields," he told a gathering at the Jane Austen House Museum in Chawton, the 17th century house where the author wrote some of her best-known novels.

The Austen notes are likely to come into circulation in 2017 and will feature a portrait adapted from an original sketch by Jane's sister together with the quote 'I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!' from Pride and Prejudice. ('A thousand times yes' does not appear in the book. That's a Keira Knightley special from the 2005 film based on the book.)

HANDOUT / REUTERS

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney poses next to a new British 10 pound Sterling banknote bearing the likeness of author Jane Austen in a picture released by the Bank of England on Wednesday.

Reformist zeal
Carney, who headed the Bank of Canada before taking the helm of Britain's central bank on July 1, is keen to assert his reformist credentials in an antiquated institution where doormen still dress in top hats and pink tail-coats.

Whether Carney, who has four daughters, will succeed in redressing the gender imbalance on the bank's monetary policy committee remains to be seen. The nine-strong body has been male-only since May 2010, and only four women have served on the committee since its creation in 1997.

In his first public press conference since taking office, Carney made only the slightest reference to monetary policy.

"You can be comforted that our job at the Bank of England is to protect the value of the new Jane Austen note," he said. "In fact, maintaining confidence in our currency is the fundamental responsibility of your central bank."

Like many other countries, Britain changes the design of its banknotes at regular intervals to address counterfeiting risks.

While the sovereign has been depicted on British banknotes since 1960, the vast majority of historical figures - introduced in 1970 - have been men. The pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale appeared on the 10 pound note from the mid-1970s, but the notes went out of issue in the early 1990s.

How Smart Scalpel Can 'Smell' Cancer - Business Insider

Electrosurgery

Wikimedia Commons

European researchers have created a scalpel that can "smell" a tumor and determine whether or not it is cancerous in a matter of seconds.

In doing so, they found a way to turn a pesky byproduct of new surgery technology ? the smoke that emits from tissue cut with electric scalpels ? and used it to make tumor surgeries safer and more effective.?

The new technology was reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine on July 17.

"Electrosurgical" tools that use heat and electricity to make precision cuts and cauterize wounds are already common in many operating rooms. And although surgeons like the advantages these tools have, the often also create small amounts of smoke normally considered to be nothing more toxic irritants.

But lead scientist Julia Balog and her team hypothesized that this smoke could be a "rich source of biological information."

Upon examining the smoke, they found that certain chemicals contained within would be able to indicate whether a tumor a surgeon cut into would be cancerous or not.?

Their "intelligent knife," ? "iKnife" ? uses sensors to analyze the smoke emitted from these cauterized cuts and the data with with a database of 3000 samples of smoke from cancerous tissue.

The team says their iKnife can accomplish in just a few seconds what it takes currently available methods between 20 and 30 minutes to do ? often while a patient waits, still sedated and open, on the operating table. This knife could eliminate the need for that, reducing operating time and potential complications significantly.

Because it relies on electronic sensors, the "smell test" could be more accurate than traditional methods of identifying cancerous tissue where technicians rely dye the tissue and examining it under a microscope. Current methods are subjective and subject to human error.

It is often difficult to determine the borders of a tumor, potentially cancerous tissue, while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

As many as 20% of breast cancer patients receiving a lumpectomy may still need further surgery to remove all cancerous tissue, according to the study. In some cases ? say, if the tumor metastasizes ? a second operation is impossible.

While a surgeon cuts into cancerous tissue the iKnife draws the continuous stream of smoke into a tube and then feeds into a machine called a mass spectrometer, which breaks the smoke down to identify the molecules found in it. These molecules provide a chemical signature that identifies the tumor as cancerous or not.?

The device does all this inside of three seconds, providing almost instant feedback.? The surgeon can determine with each cut whether they have reached the edge of cancerous tissue.?

After numerous trials on animal and human subjects, the team says the tool is ready to be used in clinics and hospitals.

Here's a diagram of how it works: The top section (A) shows the device as it would be equipped with a scalpel, section (B) shows the device equipped with forceps, and section (C) offers a close-up of the forceps.? The electrosurgical unit powers the device and contains the analytical equipment.? The air jet pump and "atmospheric interface" provide the vacuum to draw the smoke into the electrosurgical unit, then filter and expel the smoke once it has been analyzed. ?

Now Multinationals Will Have to Pay More Tax to Trade in G20 Countries, and Will be Key in Driving the Main Currency Pairs

By Forexminute - Jonathan Millet | Forex Tips | Jul 23, 2013 10:00AM BST

Now, the Multinational Companies or MNCS will have to pay more taxes if they wish to trade in G20 nations as the group has endorsed the plan designed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The 20 finance ministers from the G20 took a bold move the last Friday in Moscow. Traders need to understand that this will be crucial in driving the forex market. The measure is meant to crack down tax-avoidance wherein they route the money through tax heavens. According to the OECD, ?It is a turning point in the history of international co-operation on tax.? It will also tackle ?global tax chaos? which is being caused by MNCS such as Starbucks and Google which are being blamed for shifting profits to tax heavens.

Rewriting the Existing Rules and Regulations

Though it is a moot question whether the G20 countries will be able to impose higher taxes on the MNCs evading them, the effort on the part of earlier seems in right direction as the ambitious action plan will rewrite the existing international rules/laws that will prevent the MNCs evade taxes where they operate.

A recent case of Vodafone in India?s Supreme Court received a lot of attention from the media as the government of India accused the company for evading taxes routing the money through tax heavens. Vodafone bought Hutch, a telecom company in India but registered outside, the company did not pay taxes on the transaction as the archaic tax law does not impose such tax. The case is not isolated one as there are several other cases that have been registered recently where MNCs evaded taxes dodging the tax laws.

Even Advocates of No Taxes Mulling a Plan for Tax Imposition There are tax heavens that flourish on the maxim that no taxes attract more businesses; however, OECD is not of any such opinion as according to it MNCs must pay taxes where they operate. Many of the national laws in some of these countries are archaic and unable to cope with the latest changes in the international trade and commerce.

The OECD release says, ?National tax laws have not kept pace with the globalization of corporations and the digital economy, leaving gaps that can be exploited by multinational corporations to artificially reduce their taxes.?

The organization further says that in the era of digital economy and a borderless world of products and services that too often do not fall within the tax regime of any specific country, leaving loopholes that allow profits to go untaxed; however, this has to be changed and new tax laws have to be passed to bring MNCs under taxation.

Most flammable boreal forests in North America become more so

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A 2,000-square-kilometer zone in the Yukon Flats of interior Alaska -- one of the most flammable high-latitude regions of the world, according to scientists -- has seen a dramatic increase in both the frequency and severity of fires in recent decades. Wildfire activity in this area is higher than at any other time in the past 10,000 years, the researchers report.

Texas Giant roller coaster has history of injuries

DALLAS Nearly a dozen people reported being injured in the last five years while riding the Texas roller coaster from which a woman fell to her death last week, though the most serious injuries appear to be a concussion and muscles strains due to jostling, state records show.

Six Flags Over Texas reported 14 injuries involving the Texas Giant roller coaster between April 2008 and April 2013, according to Texas Department of Insurance records. Three of those injuries happened either before or after the ride, such as tripping on the steps leading to the roller coaster.

Roller coaster death: Woman falls from ride in Texas

It wasn't immediately clear how many of those injuries prompted the ride to be shut down, department spokesman Jerry Hagins said. If an injury requires medical attention and involved the actual ride, the ride must be closed until it gets a new safety inspection, he said.

"Our role is to make sure that happens," Hagins said, adding that the Texas Giant was currently closed and wouldn't reopen until the department sees a new safety inspection report.

Amusement park safety analyst Ken Martin noted that such injuries are self-reported, so it's hard to gauge their accuracy. He also said such numbers don't include "near-misses."

"The numbers that we hear about are typically the tip of the iceberg," he said.

Walter Reiss, an amusement park ride safety inspector, added that fatal accidents on roller coasters "are very unusual and infrequent."

"Most times that you have death accidents, it was something either ignorant or human error," he said.

The investigation is ongoing into how Rosy Esparza, identified earlier this week by CBS affiliate KTVT, fell while riding the roller coaster Friday evening at the Six Flags amusement park in Arlington, a western suburb of Dallas. A witness told local media that Esparza expressed concern moments before the 14-story ride began that the safety bar had not completely engaged.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office confirmed Monday that the 52-year-old Dallas resident was the victim in the accident, and that she suffered "multiple traumatic injuries" during the fall.

A man who identified himself as Esparza's son declined comment Monday when approached at her home.

Six Flags Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Jim Reid-Anderson said Monday that company was using "both internal and external experts" to investigate the accident, but he offered no details during a conference call to discuss the company's earnings.

In an email to The Associated Press later Monday, Six Flags spokeswoman Sharon Parker said the company "will not release any details pertaining to the investigation until it is complete."

CBS Dallas affiliate KTVT's investigative team found that the federal government has no oversight of amusement parks and some critics say the state has very little, putting the investigation largely in the hands of Six Flags instead of an independent group. Texas state's Department of Insurance, however, does hire a private safety engineer annually to inspect the Texas Giant. The latest inspection was February of this year.

Meanwhile, Six Flags has temporarily closed the Iron Rattler roller coaster at its Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. The decision came late Friday after officials heard about the accident in Arlington, Fiesta Texas spokeswoman Sydne Purvis said Monday.

Purvis said it's a precautionary move until the Texas Giant investigation is completed. Both roller coasters are wooden structures with steel rails.

The Texas Giant first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011. The coaster, which can carry as many as 24 riders, has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees.

Reiss, the amusement park expert, speculated that either Esparza managed to slip out from behind a locked mechanism or that the harness mechanism failed and it opened.

"Right now, I would say investigators are probably tearing apart every inch of that train and every harness mechanism, and inspecting and testing every millimeter of those harness mechanisms to find out whether the potential even exists for her harness to have failed or for any other harness to have failed," Reiss said.

"At the end of the day, it comes down to whether or not the person fits," he added. "If the harness locks normally, without forcing it, it's OK. And the final say is up to the ride operator to tell you, `I'm sorry, you can't ride."'

The roller coaster was issued its most recent safety permit in February and was in compliance with state regulations that require an annual inspection by a qualified engineer, according to state records. Proof of those inspections also must be submitted to the Texas Department of Insurance.

Hagins noted that Texas has an insurance-based regulatory system for amusement park rides and that the ride also was in compliance with rules that require $1 million liability insurance.

The Dallas Morning News has reported that officials with the roller coaster's car manufacturer, Gerstlauer Amusement Rides in Germany, were set to come to Texas to inspect the ride. The company could not be reached late Monday by phone and an email was not immediately returned.

Don Hankins, of Lakeland, Fla.-based PLH & Associates, Inc., who inspected the roller coaster in February, did not return a call to The Associated Press on Monday.

Kerry's Folly, Israel's Peril

In one of Team Obama?s trademark Friday afternoon specials, Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that his six rounds of -252791648shuttle diplomacy had resulted in an agreement to reconvene Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.? As usual, the timing was appropriate for an initiative designed to garner favorable headlines, but that doesn?t stand up to scrutiny.

It appears that Kerry has bought this ?breakthrough? by bullying Israel into making further concessions to its Palestinian enemies, even before the talks begin.? In exchange for nothing more than the Palestinians? agreement-in-principle to resume them, the Israelis will release some number of additional convicted terrorists.? Never mind that the ones left in Israeli jails after numerous previous releases are, by and large, those who have most successfully and murderously attacked innocent civilians in the Jewish State.

If the Israelis once again pay this price, they must expect the same results as before: More hardened criminals unleashed to wage jihad against Israel ? and against any Palestinians that might actually wish to make peace with her.

The rapturous public welcome routinely accorded these terrorists makes clear that it is such war-mongers, not the peace-makers, who are blessed in the radicalized West Bank.? That is even more true in Gaza, where few defy the despotic and virulently anti-Israel dictates of the Muslim Brotherhood?s Palestinian franchise: the designated terrorist organization, Hamas.

For that reason, among many others, notwithstanding Kerry?s ego-driven pursuit of negotiations, his purported ?breakthrough? cannot produce real progress towards a genuine peace.? And inevitably, pressure will begin to mount all over again for further Israeli concessions.

This pattern was evident in the immediate aftermath of the latest Friday afternoon special.? Unidentified Palestinian officials promptly put out the word that Secretary Kerry had, as The Blaze reported, given ?Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas a letter guaranteeing that new peace negotiations with Israel will be based on pre-1967 borders.?

Israeli officials, including prominent politicians in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s ruling coalition, have responded sharply.? They deny any agreement to use as the basis for these talks a return to the indefensible territorial boundaries that have aptly been called ?Auschwitz borders.?? So, the new negotiations may founder before they begin.

But let?s engage in a thought-experiment.? Just for the purpose of discussion, consider what would happen if Israel did agree to surrender territory on the West Bank and Golan Heights that provides a modicum of strategic depth to the otherwise incredibly vulnerable Jewish State?

One need look no further than the emerging correlation of forces arrayed against Israel.? The unmistakable reality is that it is facing the prospect for the first time in a generation of actual or prospective enemies on every side, including potentially devastating attacks from the sea.

O The most populous Arab state, Egypt, is convulsed by domestic unrest and a volatile confrontation between Islamists sworn to destroy Israel and a military that, in the past, has repeatedly tried to do so.? The two nations? cold peace, enforced for decades by a demilitarized Sinai, is jeopardized as that desert peninsula is increasingly populated by al Qaeda and other jihadists itching to attack Israelis.

O Syria is wracked by civil war in which the ultimate victory of either Iranian/Hezbollah-backed Bashir Assad or the Muslim Brotherhood-al Qaeda alliance is likely to pose new threats to the long quiet, but now restive, Golan Heights.? U.S. arming of the so-called ?rebels? may or may not assure their triumph.? But it will surely increase the danger that faction poses to Israel.

O Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are in various stages of destabilization at the hands of Islamists of assorted stripes.? Turkey is in the hands of a particularly dangerous one, Recep Tayyep Erdogan, who makes no secret of his hostility towards Israel and solidarity with its enemies.? And the Islamic Republic of Iran is continuing to build the capacity to deliver an existential nuclear threat to Israel.

O As the brilliant strategic analyst and author Mark Helprin pointed out in the Wall Street Journal last weekend (), Israel can no longer take comfort in the ?qualitative edge? in conventional armaments that previously enabled it to contend with numerically superior enemies:? ?Saudi Arabia?s air force (soon 380 combat aircraft, primarily F-15s) is rapidly gaining on Israel (441 combat aircraft) in quantity and quality. Were the Saudis to take a Muslim-solidarity time-out with Iran and join Egypt, Syria and perhaps even Turkey to defeat Israel in an air war, it would mean Israel?s death.?

In short, this is no time for the U.S. government to be demanding that its most important, self-reliant and reliable ally in the Middle East make territorial concessions that will render it more vulnerable to attack from one, or more, of the aforementioned quarters.? That is especially so given that such concessions have no prospect of translating into an enduring peace with all, or even most, of the Palestinians.

It is neither in the Israelis? interest nor our own that they weaken themselves further in the face of the region?s burgeoning shariah-driven religio-politico-cultural dynamic, one that is feeding their enemies? unrequited ambition to ?drive the Jews into the sea.?

John Kerry?s vainglorious diplomacy has thus far done nothing to mitigate that dynamic.? If anything, his sympathies and those of President Obama towards the Muslim Brotherhood are feeding it.? We must not permit such folly to continue to intensify Israel?s peril, and our own.

Death toll at 89 after central Chinese earthquake; thousands of homes lost

China Daily via Reuters

A man gives water to an injured woman after an earthquake hit Minxian county in China's Gansu province Monday.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The death toll has risen to 89, with more than 700 people injured and five others still missing, in the wake of a major earthquake in central China, state media said Tuesday.

The quake hit in Gansu province about 8 miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Monday Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Although Chinese authorities described it as a 6.6-magnitude quake, the USGS recorded it at magnitude 5.9. It said the quake caused severe shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

Most of the casualties were in Minxian county, where 87 people were killed and 515 were injured, 60 of them seriously, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said. The five missing people were also from Minxiang, it said.

Gansu authorities said at a news conference Monday night in Lanzhou, the provincial capital, that 422 aftershocks were recorded in the following hours. More than 1,200 homes were destroyed, and 21,000 others were heavily damaged, they said,

Thousands of police, firefighters, local militiamen and government officials poured into the region to help with rescue efforts, Xinhua said.

An 6.6-earthquake has killed at least 75 people, according to China's state news agency.

Relief efforts have been severely hampered by days of heavy rain that have caused flash floods leading to landslides, the Central Meteorological Administration said. One of them, in the Meichuan Township village of Yongguang, buried 12 residents, the local government said.

Chu Xiaoyi, 20, said the landslide destroyed his house, according to Xinhua. He said he and his family narrowly escaped by holding on to a utility pole.

"We were sleeping when it happened, so we ran out almost naked," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Now we have nothing left, and even our clothes are borrowed from neighbors."

In the village of Yongxing, "nearly half of the hillside collapsed," burying much of the town, Lyu Ziqiang, a spokesman for the Lanzhou Military Command, told the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper.?

"The village had had continuous rain in past days, making the soil very swampy, so the quake caused the hillside to collapse easily," Lyu said. Water and electricity in the village were still cut off, he said.

Bing Maps

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700 others. It was China's worst quake in three years.

Concert Review: 'Video Games Live: Bonus Round!' at Wolf Trap

?Video Games Live? at Wolf Trap. Photo courtesy of Wolf Trap.

For those who call video games anti-social or who think that only a minority of people, ?nerds? play them they are in for a shock when going to a performance of Video Games Live: Bonus Round! The evening opened with Video Games Live creator and Video Game composer Tommy Tallarico saying, ?Some people think video games are just for little kids, video game music is just a bunch of annoying bips and bloops, video games are the cause of violence.? Well if there was ever a crowd to staunchly disagree it was at Wolf Trap saturday night. People of all ages were out to see the National Symphony Orchestra and a chorus prepared by Danny Ozment perform music from Pacman to Skyrim.

Video Games Live! was created by Mr. Tallarico in 2002 as an immersive audio and video experience to celebrate and support the art of video game music. It is now in its 10th anniversary of touring with two albums and numerous awards.

Emil de Cou the NSO at Wolf Trap festival conductor wrote in the introduction ?all the worlds of music are welcome on our stage? and never was it more true than for the Video Games Live: Bonus Round performance. If you are a fan of orchestra concerts ?the calm spectators clapping politely at just the right moments? this performance was not for you. Rarely have I seen such audience enthusiasm, energy and sheer joy for the music being performed, it was infectious.

??a fun, exciting, and unique experience.

The National Symphony Orchestra was stellar, conducted with elegance and mirth by Emmanuel Fratianni. They were gleefully cheered on as they had to perform the music, sound effects and all, while select members of the audience got on stage and played super smash brothers live. It is hard to imagine a better way to expose young people to the wonder of the orchestra as with music that they already love and appreciate.

Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, a ?famous? composer in the gaming world,??Final Fantasy 8, Liberi Fatali? was one piece that stood out, and I must say that the music was absolutely AMAZING. ? This song is the introduction when you start a new game, foreshadowing the epic love story between Squall and Rinoa. ?For the time this game came out (1999), this took video game music to a whole new level. ?Nobuo said, ?screw that?, to conventional video game music, which was usually really short and catchy. ?He wanted to make something huge and beautiful ?and he did. They also performed a medley from Zelda. ?The girl who played the flute for the medley is Laura Intravia, and she became popular via youtube for doing this.

I can promise you that going to a performance of Video Games Live, whether you are a gamer, a musician, a parent or all three, you will have a fun, exciting, and unique experience.

Running time: Three hours with two encores.

Video Games Live: Bonus Round!?was their only performance at Wolf Trap. ?For future events at Wolf Trap, click here.
