Gaming the Clouds: Here's the D Demos of Otoy (Still ... - AllThingsD

At our D: All Things Digital conferences, we?ve taken an interest in the cloud, including showing off two of the leading game streaming services ? Otoy and OnLive.

(That?s OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman in the photo, demoing the service at D: Dive Into Mobile in 2010.)

Earlier today, in an epic fail of communication by Perlman, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based OnLive drastically reformed itself ? mysteriously laying off its staff and then saying a new company had bought the pioneering start-up?s assets and could be hiring an unknown number of employees who had just been dinged.

Said OnLive in perhaps one of the most ridonkulous statements I have ever seen:

?We can now confirm that the assets of OnLive, Inc. have been acquired into a newly formed company and is backed by substantial funding, and which will continue to operate the OnLive Game and Desktop services, as well as support all of OnLive?s apps and devices, as well as game, productivity and enterprise partnerships. The new company is hiring a large percentage of OnLive, Inc.?s staff across all departments and plans to continue to hire substantially more people, including additional OnLive employees. All previously announced products and services, including those in the works, will continue and there is no expected interruption of any OnLive services. We apologize that we were unable to comment on this transaction until it completed and were limited to reporting on news related to OnLive?s businesses. Now that the transaction is complete, we are able to make this statement.?

Forgive us if we can?t begin to understand the pointless machinations that went on.

On the other side of the coin is Otoy, an innovative Los Angeles-based software provider, which demoed its cloud-based 3-D rendering service called Octane Reader at D10 this summer, along with its game-streaming offering.

Otoy was founded in 2008 by Jules Urbach, Alissa Grainger and Malcolm Taylor ? and they seem to be doing just fine as an independent start-up in the space.

Here?s the Otoy demo, as well as the two times OnLive came to D:

Watch ?All Access: Ronda Rousey? here

Check out the second episode of Showtime's "All Access: Ronda Rousey" right here. It's 23 minutes long, but well worth your time. There is some not safe for work language, so turn the volume down.

Things to watch out for:

1. How both women break into laughter after their face-off, and what they discuss next. I expect fighters to be intense during their weigh-in day faceoffs because it's so close to fight time. Breaking into laughter months in a staredown months before the fight is what I expect.

2. "It's brutal. She's an Olympian." Rousey has no problem throwing around Nick Diaz.

3. "I get to hit stuff and make noise."

4. Rousey's face when she sees her ESPN the Magazine cover, and the discussion with her mother. On the downside, she sees a video of her online exposed much more than she had agreed to.

5. Sarah Kaufman's friend doesn't know when she's fighting. Also, Victoria, BC, being insanely beautiful.

6. Greg Jackson being as Greg Jackson as possible, yelling, "You're doing extremely well!" All coaches should rock grammar like Jackson.

7. Why you shouldn't ask Kaufman or her coach if she's working on armbar defense.

8. The narrator's voice. Without looking, who can identify that voice?

9. "Women being put in their place is part of what's wrong this world." Well said.

Two Year Report and Other Thoughts | KSaiydT's Room

Wow, it?s been two years since I started learning Japanese.

?

I think it?s time for a reflection post.

Skills

Listening

I would say this is my best skill. Especially when it comes to comedy, whether it?s manzai, rakugo, or some variety show. ?Also I seem to have a thing for song lyrics, as I pick them up pretty easily. ?On the other hand, I?m the type of person who can zone out during a conversation.

Reading

A close second to listening. Never really had a problem with grammar since I don?t separate it into its own little group?for study purposes.?I learn most of it naturally with both intensive and extensive reading. I?m just learning new words as I come across them.

Writing

I don?t write much by hand anymore. ?I takes a while to recall certain kanji or words I don?t use often. ?I?m writing journals once a week to keep up my writing. Mandarin is also helping me keep some characters in check. My daily reviews are where I do the bulk of my writing for the day.

Speaking ?

No longer my weakest skill( That award now belongs to writing)! Spending 8 months with a host family ?and systematically weakening/bursting/preventing the gaijin bubble?while in Japan forced me to stop making excuses ?and just speak to people.

Recommendations

I?ve come across a lot of awesome media in these two years and I?d just like to share a few of my favorites here.

Keep in mind that in a lot of these cases, I am?very?behind the times.

TV ? Trick series, ?????(especially the old stuff), ???????, SPEC

Anime?- Samurai Champloo, Baccano!, The Twelve Kingdoms,

Movies ? Linda Linda Linda, The Magic Hour, Tampopo (do NOT watch on an empty stomach, trust me),

Books ? ????????, Baccano! series, The Manzai series

Manga ? ?Dragonball, ????, Akira

Games /Visual Novels- Super Danganronpa 2, Steins;Gate, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Monster Hunter Tri G, Persona 4

Problems

Or hard times, I guess. ?There was that one time I had a case of intermediate blues.

Honestly, it?s been smooth sailing. That?s what happens when fun is your focus.

Where do I go from here?

I?ve officially started Mandarin and re-started Korean, so my Japanese time will naturally go down a little. ?But Japanese is still my focus. ?I know that I will be okay with handling three languages, and I have already worked out a schedule for learning. ?I?ve tried it out for the past few weeks and I know I?ve struck gold here. ?My head hurts from reading three languages in a day, but that will go away once my Korean and Mandarin improve. Wow, I just remembered that my head used to hurt after reading a few pages of manga. But anyways?

Japanese from here on out is just more reading, listening, writing, and speaking. I?d love to work on a project with other learners, such as a podcast or guest posts or just have random chats or something. ?Anyone interested in a project/chat can feel free to contact me.

Advice for your language journey

  1. Choose your?L2. ?If it is not Japanese, repeat step 1.
  2. Play Danganronpa. Repeat until you see end credits.
  3. Play Super Danganronpa 2. Repeat until you see end credits.
  1. Have fun.
  2. Do what you want to do, even if webpage x says differently.
  3. Don?t worry about when you?ll become fluent.
  4. Stay consistent.
  5. Try trying before you?re ?ready?. ?You know more than you think you do.
  6. Listen to the target language as much as possible.
  7. Get lots of sleep?.
  8. Be proud, but don?t be cocky. ?Onward and upward and all that jazz. Always strive to be harder, better, faster, stronger. Also, try to be Daft Punk, if possible. ?If you, Daft Punk, are reading this, Hi.
  9. Have fun.

Eight things that People should do When Applying for a Personal Loan

A personal loan is a short, pay back debt that individuals can use to fund various activities. However, although these loans are helpful, especially to those who are planning for long-term projects, they must consider several factors to increase their chances of getting good deals at manageable rates. Primarily, before signing any paperwork, people should research to find reputable lenders, and identify specifics such as interest rates, fees, and other costs coupled to their loans. Moreover, to choose the best personal loans, people should do the following:

1. Analyse Credit Reports

To find exceptional loans, people should first analyse their credit reports to determine their risk statuses. By doing so, they will easily correct any wrong and or misleading information, look good in front of prospective lenders, and increase their chances of getting the best deals.

2. Have a Detailed Budget

When planning to take personal loans, individuals should develop detailed budgets and follow them to the latter. Principally, by planning their expenditure well, they will only borrow amounts that they can easily repay without heightening their financial problems.

3. Always Borrow Wisely

While creating budgets, people are usually tempted to ask for more money that they need. However, they must understand that loans attract interests and other financial implications. Therefore, to avoid running into debts, individuals should only borrow amounts they need.

4. Understand the APR Concept

In business, the Annual Percent Rate (APR) depicts the total amount of money that people will pay as interest over the life of their loans. Because the law requires all lenders to make their APR rates public, people can accurately compare loans from different providers to know what is on offer. Finally, they can select the best deal that suits all their personal needs.

5. Avoid Payment Holidays

Many at times, lenders defer repayments for one or so months after issuing personal loans. Even though this seems like a good idea, people should avoid such payment holidays. This is because after the holiday period elapses, the accumulated charges lead to hefty installments.

6. Clarify Repayment Clauses

Many lending companies spread their repayment periods over a long time to accumulate more interest, and thus boost their profitability. Normally, people who flout these agreements by settling their dues early may have to contend with hefty repayment charges. Individuals, particularly those who can repay their loans ahead of time, must clarify such clauses.

7. Analyze Associated Risks

When applying for a loan, people should understand all the risks associated with their decisions. For instance, even though people who have bad credit ratings can easily get a non-secured loan, they must be 100 percent sure that they will not default on their payments. This is because they can lose their homes and other form of collateral if this happens.

8. Apply for one Loan at a Time

Although people can easily get a loan online, they should not apply for more than one loan at a time. As they process applications on the internet, they credit reports, also known as footprints, reflect all their undertakings. Therefore, those who have credit reports that are clogged with loan application are perceived as being desperate and more of a risk. This reduces their chances of getting good personal loans.

People who follow the foregoing eight tips will increase their chances of getting good loans that suit all their needs. Moreover, by paying their dues promptly, they will not only avoid extra fees or charges, but also improve their credit ratings.

'Yo-Yo Dieting' May Not Have Lasting Negative EffectsChildren's ...

From a NBC affiliate via USA Today?..

Contrary to popular belief, a history of yo-yo dieting doesn?t affect a person?s ability to lose weight in the future, a new study indicates.

Even if you?ve had problems with losing and regaining weight several times before, it?s never too late to try again, says Anne McTiernan, the study?s senior author and a researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

?You hear people say, ?Diets don?t work for me,? ? but they do work if you use a structure and stick with it,? she says. ?The message is: Don?t give up.?

For the latest study, McTiernan and colleagues followed 439 overweight or obese, sedentary women, ages 50 to 75, who did one of four programs: a reduced-calorie diet; a reduced-calorie diet plus an exercise program of at least 225 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity (mostly brisk walking); just an exercise program or no intervention.

Those who followed the reduced-calorie plan lost about 9% of their starting weight, an average of 16 pounds. Those on the reduced-calorie diet plus exercise program lost about 11% of their weight or roughly 20 pounds.
