Health

Health is a standard of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living being. In humans, it is the common condition of a person's mind, body and spirit, usually meaning to be free from sickness, injury or pain (as in "good health" or "healthy"). The World Health Organization (WHO) described health in the broader sense in 1946 as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not simply the absence of disease or infirmity." However this definition has been subject to controversy, particularly as lacking operational value and because of the issue created by use of the word "complete", it remains the most enduring. Classification techniques like the WHO Family of International Classifications, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are generally useful to define and measure the components of health.

The upkeep and promotion of health is achieved through different combination of physical, mental, and social wellbeing, together sometimes referred to as the "health triangle". The WHO's 1986 Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion further mentioned that health is not only a state, but also "a resource for daily life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, and also physical capacities."

Organized activities to prevent or treat health issues and promote good health in humans are carried out by health care providers. Programs with regard to animal health are covered by the veterinary sciences. The word "healthy" is also popular in the context of many types of non-living organizations and their impacts for the advantage of people, such as in the sense of healthy communities, healthy cities or healthy environments. As well as health care interventions and a person's surroundings, several other aspects are proven to impact the health status of individuals, including their background, lifestyle, and economic and social conditions; they are known as "determinants of health".

Following are most important things in Health:

Beauty

Beauty (also known as prettiness, loveliness or comeliness) is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of joy or satisfaction. Beauty is studied within aesthetics, sociology, social psychology, and culture. An "ideal beauty" is really an entity that is admired, or possesses features widely attributed to beauty in a specific tradition, for perfection.

The experience of "beauty" usually involves the interpretation of some entity as being in balance and harmony with nature, which may lead to emotions of attraction and emotional happiness. Because this is a subjective experience, it is often said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

There is evidence that perceptions of beauty are evolutionarily determined, that things, aspects of persons and landscapes considered beautiful are typically seen in conditions likely to offer improved survival of the perceiving human's genes.

Diet

In nutrition, diet is the amount of food taken by a person or other organism. Eating habits are the habitual decisions an individual or culture can make when choosing what foods to eat. With the word diet, is usually implied the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management factors. Even though humans are omnivores, each culture and each individual holds some food preferences or some food taboos, because of individual preferences or ethical factors. Personal dietary choices may be more or less healthy.

Suitable nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and food energy by means of carbohydrates, proteins, vegetable oils, and fats. Dietary habits and choices perform an important role in quality of life, health and longevity, and can define civilizations and play a role in religion.

Disease

A disease can be an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism. It is often construed to be a medical problem associated with particular indications and signs. It may be caused by external factors, such as infectious disease, or it may be caused by inner complications, such as autoimmune diseases. In people, "disease" is normally used more broadly to refer to any problem that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social issues, or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person. Within this wider sense, it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities, disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts as well as for other uses these could be considered distinguishable categories. Diseases usually affect people not just physically, but also emotionally, as contracting and living with several diseases can alter one's perspective on life, and their personality.

Death because of disease is called death by natural causes. There are four major types of disease: pathogenic disease, deficiency disease, hereditary disease, and physiological disease.

Diseases can also be classified as communicable and non-communicable disease.

Fitness

Fitness comprises two relevant concepts: general fitness (a state of health and wellbeing), and particular fitness (a task-oriented classification based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations). Fitness is normally achieved through proper nutrition, exercise, and enough rest.

Fitness has been defined as a group of attributes or characteristics that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical exercise. The above mentioned explanation from Physical Activity and Health: A study of the Surgeon General is the most common currently used definition of physical fitness. It was originally used by Caspersen and has been used extensively. An alternative definition by Howley and Frank that gives additional detailed information is: Physical fitness is a state of well-being with low risk of earlier health problems and energy to participate in various physical activities. When either is a good definition, most experts agree that physical fitness is both multidimensional and hierarchical.

In previous years, fitness was generally defined as the capacity to carry out the day?s activities without undue fatigue. However, as automation increased leisure time, changes in life styles following the industrial revolution rendered this definition insufficient. In current contexts, physical fitness is known as a measure of the body?s ability to function efficiently and effectively at work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic disorders, and to fulfill urgent situations.

Health is metabolic efficiency. Sickness is metabolic inefficiency. No one is totally healthy or completely sick. All of us is a unique combination of health and sickness. And each of us has a special combination of abilities and disabilities, both emotional and physical.

Ways To Use Internet Marketing For Your Business

Share

Internet marketing can complement or replace other marketing methods such as TV ads or billboards. The tips presented below can be a big help if you?d like to make use of Internet marketing in your own business.

The word ?limited? should be used in ads wherever possible. Online shopping is done a lot of the time because people are sick of what their stores have. People want items that are unique and different. If you decide to make your product a limited edition, there will be a greater sense of urgency and exclusivity associated with buying it.

TIP! Small business owners may find it difficult to compete with the big guys on the Internet. You can make your business more competitive by frequently resetting the prices of your products, and comparing them against those of your closest competitors.

Offer a money back guarantee to your customers when you market your business online. This will bring credibility to your product and will make your customers feel more secure in their purchases. If your customer knows that they can buy your product at no risk to themselves, they are going to feel more confident about their purchase.

Customers always appreciate a freebie, so offer rewards for ordering by a certain date or time. Incentives can include free or upgraded shipping, or even gift wrapping. Be creative. One way to do this is to offer free shipping to the first 100 customers who purchase a specified item. This will entice customers to buy the products on your site.

If you website is static and rarely ever changes, perhaps you should consider including a blog on your site. The thing here is that content is always king on the web. Any search engine out there eats up new info, so having a blog ensures that your business is always updated. Blogging is a great way to add new content, painlessly. Most blogging platforms even allow you to schedule future posts in advance so, take advantage of this feature to keep your blog updated.

TIP! Coming up with a viral video and then uploading it to a popular site will provide a tremendous boon to your marketing efforts. Always incorporate a link to your site so that you do not lose your client.

You may want to read psychological studies about internet marketing and web design. The color, layout, theme and other elements of your website can subconsciously influence a visitor?s perception of your brand. When you understand how this works, your profits will improve.

In an effort to provide top-notch content and improve your marketing plan, look for opportunities to interview authoritative figures within your site?s niche. You can provide a written interview or do it as an audio or video. By creating content on audio and video, you engage all of your followers and can help people become more interested in your message.

Use descriptions that promise fast results and speedy responses when you are advertising your products and services. Mention how quickly orders can be placed, how rapidly they are shipped, and how soon your customers can benefit from your products. This could mean that it only takes a few minutes to buy and download the product, or that it ships quickly.

TIP! Make yourself an expert in any topic on your site. Offering lots of relevant and accurate information makes you appear more credible, but if you try to trick people into thinking you are an expert when you are not, it is just as easy to lose your credibility.

To be successful as an Internet marketer, you must be positive about your business and show plenty of enthusiasm. Demonstrate to prospective clients how much you personally enjoy the products you sell, and prove that you value your business. If you are convincing enough, you will make them enthusiastic about the product. You will get more transactions and money!

Use ?guaranteed? in your ads and content to help boost your internet marketing strategy. Your guarantee is good as long as you hold up to it, people do not want to feel like are risking anything. Customers value their money, so a guarantee makes them feel like their money is being spent wisely.

A common strategy used by internet marketers is to offer loyalty discounts. A good thing to do is to offer customers a 10% discount on anything they spend over a certain amount. This can increase your sales.

TIP! When approaching a successful Internet marketing campaign take the time to research your competition. If you can understand the options your competitors are offering, you can stay one step ahead of the game.

When you are just starting out in Internet marketing, remember that it is best to be prepared with a backup income source and plan. This is especially important when developing a new business. It?s an excellent idea to keep plugging away at your day job until the success of your online venture is assured.

To conclude, Internet marketing may end up being useful to your business. Internet marketing can be an amazing promotional vehicle that is just as strong, or in some ways stronger, than more traditional advertising methods. By keeping the tips in this article handy, you can make Internet marketing a successful business endeavor

Opening a small business can be exciting ? and a little daunting, especially if it?s your first time working for yourself. The key is to find a proven Franchise System that provides your business with support, training and preparation for success.

Becoming a Franchise Owner can make good business sense if you?re prepared to embrace all that a Franchisor offers. Franchisors empower you with a brand, a proven system and proprietary business processes ? all designed with your success in mind. Franchise companies are invested in your success and share their assets with you to help ensure you are running your business in the best way possible to get results.

The power behind franchising is that you can buy into a proven way of doing business, ?a tried-and-true, by-the-numbers system that, if followed, should lead to predictable results,? says Steven D. Strauss, a lawyer, writer and speaker specializing in small business and entrepreneurship.

?There is little room for detour, especially in a well-established franchise system. The system is the system for a reason,? says Strauss. ?Great franchisors consider themselves partners in the success of the franchisees.?

New entrepreneurs can find comfort and confidence in the franchise system they purchased, because the Franchisor built the business model, created the brand and knows the business best.? A Franchisor?s support and insight can help new small businesses start up, stay on track, and create lasting success.

Splendours of the Islamic and Indian worlds at Christie's in London this October

SAO PAULO.- Under the title The Imminence of Poetics, the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal takes its curatorial premise from the multiplicity, recurrence and permanent mutability of artistic poetics. Poetics is understood as the instrumental repertoire that enables an individual or group, discipline or tradition, to establish ? intuitively, intentionally or unconsciously ? the discursive strategies or platforms that enable expressive acts of artistic nature.

As Chief Curator Lu?s P?rez-Oramas points out, imminence represents ?what is on the verge of happening, the word on the tip of one?s tongue, the expected silence that precedes the decision whether or not to speak, art as a discursive strategy and poetics in its plurality and multiplicity?.

The fundamental tool of the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal will be the notion of Constellation, therefore instead of focusing on single artists or works, the exhibition will present audiences with constellations of oeuvres that share a common theme, process or ideology.

Taking as a conceptual base the understanding that poetics overlap, assimilate, condense and diverge, the curators of the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal ? The Imminence of Poetics have established four conceptual notions: Survivals, Alterforms, Drifts and Voices, plus a transversal zone, Reverse. These hypotheses articulate in polyphonic form the artworks that comprise the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal.

Survival
The notion of survival reflects on the selection of referential as well as contemporary works, enabling a dialogue within a shared historical field. In the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal, survival operates through the inscription of forms and practices constituted within the ambits of spatial and temporal distant lives.

Alterforms
Alterforms explores selective transformations that artists, consciously or unconsciously, produce within their own practice. Alterforms presents a panorama of the current state of de-formative re-readings of modernity, and will hinge upon investigations into the state of artistic mediums: examining the margins of painting, printmaking, poetry, theory, sound, cinema, literature, theater and photography in a time characterized by the monopoly of the image as medium.

Drifts
The exhibition proposes a set of altered forms in which hybridization and marginality can be understood as a drift. The remains of language in the field of art as well as spaces engendered by information technologies and digitalization resurface. What forms of nomadic practices are crucial to the understanding of our time? How can we understand drift into artistic forms and ideas as a fruitful approach to deal with contemporary art?

Voices
Voices manifests itself through works in which the performative dimension of art and phonetics prevail. Voices serves as a platform for the examination of relations between visual and discursive poetics. Approaching the voice as malleable artistic material in all its strands and possibilities, Voices pervades Survivals, Alterforms and Drifts and extends throughout the city of S?o Paulo and the Bienal?s virtual platforms. Creating a bridge between the notion of voice and the manifold performative dimensions of art, Voices provides a possibility to give the audience a voice.

Reverse
Conceived as a transversal zone in relation to the exhibition at the Biennial Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park, Reverse is a platform that not only embraces all the curatorial elements of the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal, but shapes a citywide constellation. Reverse will take the form of urban interventions and exhibitions held in conjunction with partner institutions throughout the city, as well as film screenings and performances by Brazilian and international artists. Among the partners in the Reverse network are Casa Modernista, Capela do Morumbi, Casa do Bandeirante and other institutions.

Educational Component
The educational component of the 30th S?o Paulo Bienal ? The Imminence of Poetics, coordinated by Stela Barbieri, is synchronized with the general curatorship of the exhibition. The educational program, conducted according to the concepts presented by the curators, is an opportunity to create dialogues that begin before the exhibition opens to the public and continue with courses, workshops and activities.

Symposia
The Imminence of Poetics proposes a debate on the present state of artistic activity through a number of public programs in which the Biennial itself and the general aspects of its contents serve as the focus for discussion. Three symposia are scheduled for S?o Paulo throughout autumn 2012 in addition to a poetic/theoretical gathering, fostering a trans-territorial and trans-poetic dialogue between two cities - Ciudad Abierta, Valpara?so, in Chile, and S?o Paulo, Brazil.

Detox Weekends ? what are they about? | Health in Motion Fitness

Our HIMF detox weekends have been a big success this year ? almost every month of the year has seen a group head down to the Mornington Peninsula to learn about healthy eating and be put through their paces during various fitness sessions. Coming into the warmer weather, more and more people are asking ?what exactly happens on these weekends?? and ?what will I get from doing one??.

The detox weekends offer everyone something different.

For the person who wants to lose a bit of weight and kick start their fitness routine, the weekend is a chance to challenge your body with various fitness sessions (beach walks, bootcamp, boxing, yoga, pilates), learn how far you can push yourself physically, and learn some great, simple recipes to cook at home to help you continue the detox experience.

Some people go to get back on track with their health. A few days where there?s no chocolate, no coffee and no alcohol to tempt them may be all they need to get back on track and know they can survive on healthy, natural foods, without the vices they are in the habit of leaning on to get through the day.

Those who have returned several times throughout the year have enjoyed variety in their meal options (we aim to change things up every time), so have walked away with something new each time. They also tend to enjoy that time to themselves- a chance to focus solely on their needs and not those of their family, their job or their friends. It?s a chance to be a better version of themselves, so they can return to day to day life with a fresh, happy perspective. A healthy person is always a happier person.

There is so much to gain from attending one of these weekends-if you?re thinking about it, stop thinking, and just do it. You won?t regret it :)

Genes associated with primary angle closure glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in Chinese people

ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2012) ? Singapore scientists have identified three new genes associated with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), a leading cause of blindness in Chinese people. PACG affects 15 million people worldwide, 80% of whom live in Asia.

The discovery, published Aug. 26 in the journal Nature Genetics, was conducted collaboratively by scientists from the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI)/Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), National University of Singapore (NUS), National University Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The team of scientists led an international consortium that carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1,854 PACG cases and 9,608 controls of over five sample collections in Asia. They performed validation experiments in another 1,917 PACG cases and 8,943 controls collected from a further six sample collections from around the world. A total of 1,293 Singaporeans with PACG and 8,025 Singaporean controls were enrolled in this study. This work is the first to study PACG genetics using a genome-wide perspective.

This finding confirms the long-standing suspicion of Professor Aung Tin, the lead Principal Investigator of this project, who is Senior Consultant and Head of Glaucoma Service at SNEC, Deputy Executive Director at SERI, and Professor of Ophthalmology at NUS. Prof Aung has worked on PACG for over 10 years and believes from clinical observations that the disease is strongly hereditary.

"This provides further evidence that genetic factors play a role in development of PACG," said Prof Aung. "It is a major achievement for our Singapore team leading the largest international consortium of doctors and scientists involved in glaucoma research. The results may lead to new insights into disease understanding and open the possibility of novel treatments in the future as well as the potential of early identification of people at risk of the disease."

The study showcases one of many exciting scientific collaborations between GIS and SERI, and highlights the importance and significant advantages of inter-disciplinary collaborations between the two institutes under such joint efforts. The study was funded primarily by the Translational Clinical Research (TCR) program grant from the National Research Foundation that was awarded to SERI in 2008, as well as other grants from the National Medical Research Council (NMRC), Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), and funding from GIS.

GIS Acting Executive Director Prof Ng Huck Hui congratulated the team on the success of the project. "This is an exemplary demonstration of the potential power in genomics being used to dissect complex human diseases with hereditable predispositions. The collaboration between SERI and GIS is synergistic in many broad aspects, and it marries core strengths from both institutions."

Prof Wong Tien Yin, Executive Director at SERI and Provost's Chair Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, NUHS, said, "This is a landmark finding, and may potentially change how we view PACG as a disease with genetic links. It highlights how a collective effort from scientists and clinicians and clinician-scientists can unravel diseases of major importance to Singapore. Because this disease is more common in Asians than in the Western populations, such studies will not be done in the US/Europe. This study has to be done in Asia as it is a disease with more implication for Asians. As such, Singapore has led the way forward."

Dr Khor Chiea Chuen, Principal Investigator, Human Genetics, at GIS added, "Modern genomics is a very powerful tool in dissecting the hereditable basis of common human diseases. It gives all of us a ray of hope, however far-fetched it may be, that one day we will be able to tailor treatments based on individual genetic profile."

"The information on genes involved in PACG has also opened up new and exciting research areas for us that we hope will culminate in new treatment modalities for angle closure glaucoma in the future," Said Dr Eranga Vithana, Associate Director, Basic and Experimental Sciences at SERI, and lead author of the paper.

Prof Janey Wiggs, Paul Austin Chandler Assoc. Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School added, "This is a landmark study identifying three genes that contribute to angle-closure glaucoma, a form of glaucoma that is particularly common in Asians. These data are the first critical steps toward a better understanding of the underlying molecular events responsible for this blinding disease."

SERI is the national body for ophthalmic and vision research in Singapore based at SNEC and NUS. The GIS is a research institute under the umbrella of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore.

The Dangers of the Well-Wisher - The Doctor Weighs In | The Doctor ...

Beau Carter

My former stepmother (my father?s second wife after my mother died of a medical error) died recently of pancreatic cancer after living a completely healthy life for 89 years.

She took chemo only to extend the inevitable for an additional 3 months or so to make it to her 90th birthday on July 15. She did this, saying goodbye to her grandchildren from her bed in the family house in Rockport, Maine and then, her work done, died 5 days later.

I went to see her in March. We ate lobster rolls and I took her to dinner at the most expensive French restaurant in Camden, Maine. We talked about my father and sang songs. At that point the chemo didn?t bother her much, but I knew I had only one more chance to see her after I got home.

I scheduled the trip in mid-June and had all the plans made, but when I called her three days before I was to leave she said ?Oh I love hearing your voice. Please continue to call me.? She never said ?Don?t come, I don?t feel that well and I can?t entertain you? (and I probably don?t want you to see me like this) because she was swelling and had a nasty red splotch in her scalp. But in her positive way, that?s what she meant.

Now here?s the well-wisher part. I felt bad for a whole day because of course I hadn?t expected her to entertain me, I had just wanted to say goodbye. But after a bit I got over my own selfishness and realized that ?I was pouting as if the trip were about ME.

Good grief. It wasn?t her job to make me feel better for having gone to see her (as it is with so many well wishers). It was my job to give her space. I often told her she had only one job and that was to die with grace and to get whatever she needed in order to make that happen and to hell with anyone else?s needs. Which, eventually, included me.

But thank God we are able to have little epiphanies from time to time and enjoy moments of clarity.

Beau (Raymond) Carter is the Editor of Medical Home News and several other health care bulletins.
