Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Brain Scans Help ...

Brain scans of patients with social anxiety disorder can help determine if cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) could be an effective treatment option, suggests researchers from MIT, Boston University (BU), and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Either CBT or medications are normally used to treat social anxiety, but scientists have not been able to identify which of these treatments will suit a particular individual best.

By looking at photos of faces and measuring brain activity, the usefulness of therapy could be determined before the sessions even start, according to the team.

With about 15 million people in the United States struggling with the disorder, authors believe these findings will help doctors decide which treatment is right for each patient.

"Our vision is that some of these measures might direct individuals to treatments that are more likely to work for them," said John Gabrieli, lead author, the Grover M. Hermann Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, and a member of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research.

Choosing The Right Treatment

CBT is known for changing the thought and behavior patterns that give the sufferer anxiety, such as feelings of intense fear in social settings that impair their ability to act normally. Some patients have anxiety because they think that others are watching them, however, the therapy shows that their beliefs are false and no one is judging them.

The current study is part of a larger one that MGH and BU conducted recently on cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety.

Gabrieli explained:

"This was a chance to ask if these brain measures, taken before treatment, would be informative in ways above and beyond what physicians can measure now, and determine who would be responsive to this treatment."
Although some patients find the idea of taking pills easier than going to therapy, it is not an effective method of treatment. Some doctors, on the other hand, are currently making decisions about treatment based on what their patient's insurance covers or because of potential drug side effects.

"From a science perspective there's very little evidence about which treatment is optimal for a person," Gabrieli commented.

In order to image patients' brains before and after treatment, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used. Imaging has never before been used as a way to predict a patient's reactions to a certain treatment, although some imaging studies have shown brain differences between patients with nueropyschiatric disorders and their healthy counterparts.

Measuring Differences in Brain Activity

Experts in the new study had subjects look at images of angry or neutral faces, in order to identify differences in brain activity as they observed. Social anxiety levels were tested after undergoing 12 weeks of CBT.

Results showed that those who benefited the most from therapy were the individuals who had shown a greater difference in activity in high-level visual processing areas during the face-response task.

It is unclear why activity in brain regions involved with visual processing would be a good indicator of treatment outcomes, according to Gabrieli. He believes it could be because the patients who received more benefits were those whose brains were already adept at separating different types of experiences.

The authors are carrying out further research to determine if brain scans can predict differences in response between cognitive behavioral therapy and drug treatments.

Gabrieli concluded:

"Right now, all by itself, we're just giving somebody encouraging or discouraging news about the likely outcome of therapy. The really valuable thing would be if it turns out to be differentially sensitive to different treatment choices."

Motherhood - Ruckus and Rubies: Thankfulness Thursday - Luck or ...

In no way, shape, or form am I superstitious.? I believe in the sovereign Lord God Almighty, creator and divine over everything.? There is no such thing as coincidence, chance, karma, luck, horoscopes, or the like.? I believe all of those things are satan's way of taking our focus and belief off of God and His power.?

Recently we have had a string of repair bills.? Growing up I always heard that things like trouble "come in three's".? Of course I don't believe this.? However, I do believe that satan likes to kick us while we're down and he likes to put fear in us.? So, when my sweet hubby's truck needed some major and expensive repairs I should have known he wasn't finished with us yet.? After the truck repairs, our air conditioning went out.? Shortly after that,?my vehicle needed costly repairs.? Then this week he abused our 10 year old refrigerator to kick us even more.

All of these situations happened within a span of a few months, just after we paid for an upcoming?(and much needed) family vacation?and just after we switched to a more expensive, but worthwhile curriculum.? Do I think this is just coincidence or bad luck?? Absolutely NOT!?

I just want to praise the Lord, because I have felt His presence with us through all of the attacks of the enemy.? My children are seeing yet again how their parents depend on God and how He sees our family through the good and bad times.? I have overflowing blessings to be thankful for even in the midst of satan's raging.? When I think of these attacks, I realize things could be so much worse.? These repairs and expenses are small potatoes compared to what many people go through.? Of course I was?disappointed, I complained about?at first, and for a split second I wondered why?? However, it's times?like these that I wonder what major hardship God is saving us from by allowing these minor things to come into our lives.??I can be grateful in the midst of these problems, because I've seen evidence of?God's grace and mercy so many times in my life.?

Today I am continuing my list of One Thousand Gifts with you today, inspired by Ann Voskamp's?encouraging book, One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are. The good?and bad circumstances in life do not happen by chance, but are intricately woven through life by our Lord for our?good and His glory:

21.? Strong, but gentle hands of my sweet hubby;?They have repaired the broken, built the strong, lifted the heavy, worked tirelessly to provide, loved and disciplined the babes, changed some diapers, prepared meals in my absence, cleaned when I was sick, fit perfectly intertwined with?mine through the good and bad times for 20 glorious years!

?

?

22. Vehicles that safely?carry my precious cargo.

?

?

23.? A?old-fashioned, broken refrigerator?that served our home and family and endured our use and abuse for 10 years.

?

24. A shiny, new refrigerator with larger capacity, energy efficiency, water on the door (because I know my children will drink water just so they can play with it), and discounted price.

?

25.? A loving Heavenly Father, our light in the darkness, who graciously and mercifully walks with us when we give our lives to Him.? He takes the lives we've surrendered and?molds & shapes them into something beautiful!

?

Studying Sex Differences in Autism Focus of ... - Health News Digest

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - New Haven, Conn.? The reasons why autism spectrum disorders are almost five times more common among boys than among girls may soon be revealed, thanks to a five-year, $15 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant awarded to Yale School of Medicine for the Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE) research program.

Led by principal investigator Kevin Pelphrey of Yale Child Study Center, the Yale ACE award is part of a $100 million National Institutes of Health grant to nine institutions investigating sex differences in autism spectrum disorders, or ASD, as well as studying ASD and limited speech.

Pelphrey and a collaborative team of researchers from Yale, UCLA, Harvard, and the University of Washington, will investigate the poorly understood nature of autism in females. The team will study an unprecedented number of girls with autism and will focus on genes, brain function, and behavior throughout childhood and adolescence. The objectives are to identify causes of autism and develop novel treatments.

ASDs are complex developmental disorders that affect how a person behaves, interacts with others, communicates, and learns. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ASD affects approximately 1 in 88 children in the United States.

?This award represents an innovative collaboration among three laboratories at Yale led by Drs. Matthew State, James McPartland, and myself,? said Pelphrey, the Harris Associate Professor in the Child Study Center, and associate professor of psychology, and director of the Child Neuroscience Laboratory. ?It is my hope that this award will invigorate research in autism at Yale and allow us to maintain our outstanding history of cutting edge work in this field.?

NIH created the ACE Program in 2007 to launch an intense and coordinated research program into the causes of ASD and to find new treatments. The program supports large collaborative efforts to advance the broad research goals. The program expanded this year to examine such issues as children and adults who have limited or no speech, possible links between ASD and other genetic syndromes, potential treatments, and the possible reasons why ASDs are more common among boys than girls, according to Alice Kay of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), one of five institutes funding the ACE program.

In addition to the NICHD, the NIH institutes that support the ACE program are the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The eight other researchers to receive ACE funding hail from the following institutions: University of California, Emory University, Boston University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School.

*Research reported here was supported by the National Institute Of Mental Health (NIMH) of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number R01MH100028.

A new era for e-readers - or the beginning of the end?

28 min.

Amazon's announcement Thursday brought e-readers into the spotlight again with a lighter, brighter and sharper e-ink Kindle. But more admiration was lavished on the new Kindle Fire HD models, which constitute the biggest rival to the iPad yet. Tablets are the apple of the tech world's eye, but does that mean that e-readers are going to be left out in the cold?

Between the iPad, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire and a dozen other high-profile tablets, the modest e-reader seems like an easy device to forget. But it's also easy to forget how early we are in that technology's life: The devices seem ubiquitous now, but they?were really introduced to the world just five years ago, or a bit more if you count the less popular models that preceded the Kindle.

Yet e-ink readers have?come extremely far in that short?time: If you ever get a look at an original Kindle, you will surely note how grey the screen is and the clumsiness of the interface. The newest models hold more books, display them far better, and are easier to navigate.

But unlike tablets, e-readers don't vary at all in size or intent; they haven't proliferated into other niches, or nooks if you will. Every popular e-reader has a 6-inch screen made by E-Ink Corporation, a company founded in the U.S.?but now based in Taiwan, and it's totally focused on one thing: replacing books, primarily mass market paperbacks.?

The latest Kindle epitomizes this strategy: whitest possible screen, no distractions or keys whatever, weighs very little, battery lasts for weeks ? it's getting to the point where buying a paperback offers no benefits at all.

Some early experiments like the Plastic Logic QUE?e-reader and Amazon's Kindle DX tried to popularize a larger, more expensive form factor, but it was soon clear that people were not interested in paying $400 to replace the next few $5 books they'd be buying. Newspapers and periodicals failed to support the devices, and wasn't hard to see why: they were bulky, the displays were low-quality, and the market was still small.

And there have been other devices that were ill?conceived or?poorly?received: the anemic color e-paper screens like Triton and Mirasol simply weren't good, and so were outshone (so to speak) by the beautiful backlit screens of tablets. And attempts at making them productivity tools (the Entourage eDGe) or attempting to jump the gun on innovations like lighting (bulky cases that obviate the readers'?svelte form factors) were likewise met with skepticism.

Consequently, e-readers survived as a device class by focusing on one form factor and one purpose. Just as PCs coalesced into the desktop form factor in the '80s because it was the best option at the time (laptops were enormous; tablets were science fiction), e-readers did what the market demanded of them and the result is that the devices we know as e-readers have an incredibly narrow definition.

But the desktop PCs of yesteryear are increasingly anachronistic in a world where smartphones, tablets, ultra-light laptops?and so on, are usurping their functions. And e-readers will have to make similar adjustments, because they can't stay replacements for paperbacks forever.

Where are the e-readers that you can unfold like a newspaper, or roll up and put in your bag? Where are the e-readers that are sealed against water and sand, so you can take them to the beach or soldiers can use them in the field? Where are the e-readers that let you write on them as easily as you would a piece of paper, and automatically convert your words to text and save to the cloud? They're coming, make no mistake. But first, the combatants in the war to replace the paperback must finish their battle. Then they can move on to new conquests.

The popularity of tablets is easy to understand, yet?there are still very significant advantages to a device like the Kindle. But the makers of e-readers must multiply those advantages if they hope to stay competitive. If they're smart, today will just be the beginning; if they're lazy, it's the beginning of the end.
